Our History

Climate Justice | Ecological Balance | Economic Sustainability

Today, an Environmental Democrat:

  • is dedicated to developing, promoting, and implementing policies to achieve Climate Justice, Ecological Balance, and Economic Sustainability.
  • recognizes the reality and imminent threat of human-made climate change
  • advocates for pro-environment issues and candidates
  • volunteers for community service, pro-environment campaigns, & grassroots organizing.

The history of the Sacramento Environmental Democrats begins in the early 2000s.

We have always been an all-volunteer, all-action group committed to keeping our world alive, green, equal, healthy, and honest.

We originally began as the Green Democrats, when we were founded in 2007 by Perry Metzger, Carrie Conlon, Warren Harding, and a few other dedicated environmentalists.

We formed in 2007 with Perry Metzger, Carrie Conlon, Warren Harding, and a few other dedicated environmentalists with a big goal:  SAVE THE WORLD.

Our original focus was prioritizing the crisis of climate change in the Democratic Party.

At that time, despite the hard work of former Vice President Al Gore, climate change was only occasionally discussed within the Democratic Party.

We knew what we know now: that anthropogenic climate change is the single most urgent issue facing our country and our world.

A society without the ability to breathe clean air, drink safe water, or eat sustainable foods will not be able to achieve any of its other goals.

Over time, we witnessed the growing ignorance of elected officials at national and state levels regarding the imminent catastrophe of global climate change.

We also witnessed divisions within left-of-center and Democratic Party groups, culminating in serious problems during the 2016 Primary and General elections.

In the age of a post-truth GOP, we believe our role in the Democratic Party is to emphasize how environmentalism is required to achieve not only ecological balance, but also economic sustainability and social, racial, and gender justice.

Now, we advocate for better local, regional, and national environmental policies and candidates throughout all of Sacramento County by participating in Democratic-focused grassroots political organizing, action, and discussions.

A society without the ability to breathe clean air, drink safe water, or eat sustainable foods will not be able to achieve any of its other goals.

We decided we needed to broaden our horizons to include human elements of an environment, including housing, economics, gender/sexuality, and other components of social justice.
